One of the major responsibilities of the Planning Board is the development and adoption of the City Master Plan, which is the vision for the future growth of the community. The City's Master Plan was last amended in 2008. The Board also reviews and approves development plans, when the use is permitted. When the use isn't permitted, the Zoning Board of Adjustment has jurisdiction. The Planning Board is also required by State Statute to review many documents and plans to determine consistency with the Master Plan. The Planning Board is also advisory to the Administration in matters related to the physical development of the City, such as the Land Use Ordinance, the Capital Improvement Program, the School Facilities Plan and redevelopment projects.
