City of Vineland moving ahead on clean energy

As the gubernatorial candidates spar over clean energy policy, Vineland is quietly turning all the green talk into concrete action.

Landis Sewerage Authority officials expect the first of two solar fields to be operating next month, just six months after announcing the deal between the authority and Conectiv Energy to build the fields. When the second phase of the project is completed by June 2010, the solar fields together will be capable of generating up to 4 megawatts of electricity, about enough to power 400 homes.

Sure, it's a small step. But combined with the planned installation of a 3.7-kilowatt wind turbine on Mill Road, it's clear the authority is doing its part to reduce climate change and lessen America's dependence on foreign oil.

The savings to taxpayers (about an average of $300,000, or 30 cents on a $100 electric bill) may not seem like a lot, but every little bit counts.
