RE: Net Metering Information for Renewable Generation Projects
Dear Customer:
The Vineland Municipal Electric Utility (VMEU) allows “net metering” on qualifying residential and commercial Distributed Generation (DG) equipment. With the DG generator placed “behind the meter”, the meter is allowed to run “backwards” to reverse the meter reading when the customer’s equipment generates electricity. This practice allows some DG customers to reverse their metering reading essentially to zero, resulting in a bill consisting only of the Customer Charge. This monthly charge is $4.50 for residential customers and $11.20 for commercial customers.
VMEU plans to continue to encourage and support the use of renewable distributed generation through net metering. However, VMEU does not want to subsidize these customers at the expense of penalizing others.
To better address this subsidy issue, VMEU is considering decoupling existing electric tariffs to more accurately reflect the cost of building and maintaining the electric system in comparison to the cost of generation and distribution of electric energy. VMEU will also consider the value of payments for generation from DG customers in excess of the individual customer’s consumption.
As we begin to phase in these new rates, we will continue to advise all customers.
Thank you,
Gus Foster, Senior Engineer Vineland Municipal Electric Utility |
